The Art of Microblading: How to Choose the Right Pigments and Tools
Microblading has transformed the brow industry, offering clients a way to achieve fuller, natural-looking eyebrows with long-lasting results. But behind every flawless brow lies the careful selection of pigments and tools. Whether you're a professional artist or building your own brow brand, understanding how to choose the right microblading products is essential to delivering quality results. In this guide, we’ll explore the key factors that define microblading success.
What Is Microblading? A Quick Overview
Microblading is a semi-permanent brow tattoo technique that uses fine needles to manually create hair-like strokes along the brow line. Unlike machine-based tattooing, microblading is performed by hand with a microblading pen and pigment, allowing for more precision and a natural appearance.
Its popularity continues to rise as clients seek low-maintenance beauty solutions. With proper application and high-quality materials, results can last 12–18 months before a touch-up is needed.
Why Pigment Selection Matters in Microblading
Choosing the right microblading pigment is just as critical as technique. The pigment affects how the brows look immediately after treatment and how they heal and fade over time.
High-quality pigments are specially formulated to be stable, safe, and color-true. Key factors to consider include:
-
Undertone compatibility: Warm, cool, or neutral
-
Color retention: Will the pigment fade evenly?
-
Ingredients: Free of heavy metals and toxins
-
Certification: Compliant with international cosmetic safety standards
Using low-quality pigments can lead to undesirable color changes, faster fading, or even skin irritation—risking both your results and your reputation.
Selecting the Right Pigment for Any Skin Type
Every client has a unique skin undertone, and matching it correctly is crucial for natural-looking results.
-
Warm undertones (yellow, golden): Choose pigments with olive or green bases to neutralize warmth.
-
Cool undertones (pink, red): Opt for warm brown pigments to balance the tone.
-
Neutral undertones: Medium brown pigments with balanced bases work best.
For fair skin, avoid overly dark or red-based pigments. For medium to tan skin, mid-to-dark browns are ideal. For deep skin tones, ensure the pigment has high opacity without appearing ashy.
QM Makeup offers a wide range of OEM microblading pigments, precisely formulated to match different skin tones while ensuring long-term color stability and safety.

Micro Blade
What size needle for microblading eyebrows? U-curved needle or a slope needle?
Slope Needle: The tip of a tilting needle usually presents a beveled angle. This shape is suitable for detailed line and contour work and is commonly used for contour and fine areas of tattoos, but may require some skill to ensure smoothness and consistency of the line.
U-curved Needle: U-curved needles have a U-curved tip and usually consist of multiple needles. The U-curved needle design distributes ink more evenly across the skin. It is more suitable for color filling and shading effects and gradient effects on large areas, and can cover a larger area in a short period of time. However, you need to control the pressure and speed to avoid uneven color.
To summarize, the choice of needle depends mainly on the design of the eyebrows semi permanent makeup and the desired effect.
